Since the beginning of the year, 133 people have died in mass shootings around the United States. Most recently, 49 people were slaughtered in an Orlando nightclub by a shooter with an assault weapon. I don't know about you, but I am weary about senseless violence especially when it is precipitated by racial, religious and sexual hatred.
It's time the carnage was stopped by the leaders of our society with our support. There are many ideas floating about, but if we can send space shuttles into outer space, we certainly can reason together to put a rein on these atrocities.
The young people of Orlando who were mowed down last week were brothers, sisters, sons and daughters of some family somewhere. Not every person in the club were homosexual, yet the hatred of one gunman took the lives of 49 souls including the critical wounding of 53 others. For those who survived, their lives have changed forever. They will live in fear and be traumatized for the rest of their lives with psychological scars that will haunt them forever.
When we talk about "God is still speaking," we mean that we will not give in to antiquated biblical biases that ultimately lead to the vilification of certain groups and classes that have been oppressed throughout history. Today, God is calling us to be a hospitable people who are tolerant and inclusive. Until the whole world gets this concept, there will be more hatred and killing and murderous obscenities without an end in sight.
I am calling on the leaders of Calvary to meet together to discuss the possibilities of putting an end to racial and sexual hostilities that have their root in outdated myths. May God help us to come up with solutions to these very complex social issues. Will you join me as part of the answer?
